This
haunting dates from middle XIX century. The ghost seems to look like a
beautiful young maiden in Victorian finery, a screeching and misshapen demon or
just like a shadow, depending on who is giving the account. She is known to
haunt her old manor, belonging to the former Earls, and the surrounding lands,
including the lake where legend says she died.
Most of the
apparitions are harmless, just a figure wandering the fields at night and
vanishing when the observer comes too close, or making a racket in the
basement, which has been walled in. However, other witnesses claim that the
ghost looked at them, and in those cases there are reports of a chill, of dread’s
finger running up and down one’s spine.
While
Beatrice Nightray was an active ghost during the XIX century, sightings have
become increasingly rare since the manor where she lived burned down after the
owner decided to dismantle most of the rooms to take them with him overseas.
